Chaque année, le 16 octobre, l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture célèbre la Journée mondiale de l’alimentation, qui commémore la date de sa création, en 1945. Le thème retenu pour la Journée mondiale de l’alimentation et le TeleFood en 2005, ” Agriculture et dialogue des cultures “, évoque la contribution des différentes cultures à l’agriculture mondiale et plaide en faveur d’un dialogue sincère entre les cultures, condition préalable de tout progrès dans la lutte contre la faim et contre la dégradation de l’environnement.

Cassava, a traditional crop in many parts of the world and a most consumed staple food in many African countries, is faced with a new outbreak of the mosaic disease. Research initiatives and programmes are being worked out, in FAO, in collaboration with partners in Africa, Latin America and Asia, in order to develop pest resistant varieties but also diversify their use.
